Easy Basketball Door Sign Tutorial

I have already mentioned my family’s love for March Madness and how we like to do a few creative projects to add to the fun. I did this activity with the kids and they really enjoyed it, so I figured I would make a tutorial. This basketball door sign craft is a really easy one. It can be done with different ages and abilities, boys or girls. It is probably best suited to elementary school aged children. The boys I had working on it were preschool and surprisingly, the teenager joined in once he found out it was basketball related. He’s the super fan around here and plays too. It was during their league tournament, which seems to spark some intense team loyalty. That and the desire to one-up his little brother is probably what motivated him to participate, but it did keep him busy for a few minutes too. He decided to make one with his team name and colors and his jersey number. And I made one for photo purposes when I realized I forgot to take pictures. OOPS!

This basketball door sign can be completed quickly, but it does include a little paint and glue drying. You could use this activity to keep the kids busy at a basketball themed birthday party. If you’re having a March Madness party or you’re having a party to watch the NBA playoffs and kids will be coming, this can entertain some younger kids that are old enough to like sports but might not be too interested in actually watching the game. You could also use this basketball door sign as part of some basketball themed room décor. It is easy enough for kids to make themselves and gives them a way to add something with their own personal touch to the room.

Supplies

Round wood cutout (I got mine in the craft department at Walmart)

Orange paint

Black sharpie marker or paint (not shown)

Foam letter and number stickers

Ribbon for hanging

Glue

1. Take your round piece of wood and paint it with the orange paint. You need thicker paint to create opaque color. I originally bought some super cheap acrylic craft paint but it was too thin and the first one we did didn’t have the right color, even after multiple coats of paint. I ended up buying a bottle of Martha Stewart paint. Learn from my mistakes. To keep this craft quick and easy, do yourself a favor and make sure whatever paint you use is thick enough to cover.

2. After the paint dries, use your marker to draw the lines to make it look more like a basketball. In case you’ve never looked that closely at a basketball…

first crossing straight lines…basketball-lines then curves.  basketball-kids-craft

3. Have your child add the stickers for their name and jersey number. They could also spell out the name of their favorite team if they’re just fans, or use letters in team colors.

4. Cut a piece of ribbon long enough to hang your basketball with. I got this cute ribbon with basketballs on it, but team colors would look nice too. Somewhere between 7-12 inches is fine. Glue the ends to the back of the basketball making a loop. Let it dry.

If necessary, help your child hang it on their door or in their room and you’re done! So get crafting and leave a comment to let me know how your basketball door signs turned out.
